Trader Joe's Trofie Colore
This is a brand-new item; Trader Joe's web site has nothing about it yet.
The main thing this has going for it is the appearance. It may be the prettiest pasta I've ever seen, both dry and after cooking.
Its taste is fine, but nothing out of the ordinary--just like every other semolina pasta.
It has a fatal flaw, however: It does not cook evenly. Even with frequent stirring of the boiling water, some pieces were more thoroughly done that others. And even within individual pieces of the pasta, when one end was more tightly curled than the rest, that little bit was left insufficiently cooked. This is unacceptable.
Will I buy it again?
No. If not for that one defect, it would have been a yes.

I agree with the comment above about uneven cooking and ended up throwing it all out. This is the first time I've ever bought anything at Trader Joe's that I didn't absolutely love.
ReplyDeleteI just bought this pasta. I have never seen it before. It has 4 colors and is beautiful. I wanted it to make a special salad for a family BBQ. I just noticed on the label that it says "may contain traces of shellfish (squid) Yikes! My brother in law is allergic to shellfish! I have never seen that warning before. Especially on pasta. I am glad I saw that. I do not usually read the labels on pasta that I buy.
