Honeycrisps are my favorite eating apples. But, like any produce, they can be hit or miss on flavor and quality.
This bag from Trader Joe's has been, so far (I've eaten four of them), only average on taste. Nothing off-putting, but a far cry from the best I've ever had. And they're unusually small.
Will I buy it again?
No.
I was in CA last week and of course went to trader joe’s (omg! They had sunchokes!! Just $2.50 for a pound!) and bought the large individual honeycrisp apples which were excellent, sweet and juicy and crunchy. I always feel like the baby apples are somehow dumbed down, like when they hybrid the seeds to make them small something gets lost. And i love apples so polishing off a big one isn’t a problem for me.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was enjoying them sliced on toast with a sharp cheddar for breakfast - i feel like you would enjoy that combo.

Bob -- You might find clues (or even answers) to why these Honeycrisps don't stack up to the best in this New Yorker article: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/11/21/crunch. The decline of the Honeycrisp is forecast there.
